James Reviews The Views – Cat Ba Island (Ha Long Bay)

This will be a short, sharp series of blog posts. For each of the locations we visit I will give a to-the-point, no nonsense assessment of the city/town/village.

  • Location: Cat Ba Island (including Ha Long Bay but we specifically stayed on the island)
  • Population: 13,000
  • Must see: There is loads to see on the island but my top recommendation is the views from Ngu Lam peak in Cat Ba National Park. Make a day of it, rent a scooter, head north from the town and stop at the hospital cave, the National Park and continue on to the north pier. It’s a great day out. On the way back stop at Cannon Fort to watch the sunset.
  • Must do: The top day out in the region is the Ha Long Bay Boat Tour. Do a full day boat cruise that takes you to monkey island (climb the summit and see wild monkeys), jump off the boat, have lunch at sea and kayak through caves. It was one of my favourite days in all of Vietnam.
  • Must eat: Casa Bonita was my favourite restaurant on the island!
  • Watch out for: The rats. There seems to be a lot of rats on the island, we even had a huge one in the room we checked into. Needless to say we quickly changed rooms.
  • Best place to drink: Oasis Bar!
  • Best views:
  • View Rating: 8/10
